March is Women’s History Month, and Southwestern Investment Group is celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world. We are taking this time to recognize that each day, more women are becoming the hands-on decision makers with their finances.
While traditionally men have been associated with making household financial decisions, that’s no longer the norm. Studies show that 70% of millennial women make the financial decisions in their families, according to a 2020 report from Boston Consulting Group.
What Type of Financial Decisions?
“Financial decisions” is a general term, so what exactly are the specifics? This no longer means buying groceries or paying bills; it now means women are deeply involved in the most important financial planning and investment decisions of their households. And, it seems women investors are often outperforming their male counterparts.
A 2018 study of 2,800 men and women by the Warwick Business School found that women’s overall investment returns were nearly 2% higher than those realized by men. Some reasons why include:
- Risk Averse: Research has proven that women take less risk than their male counterparts.
- Planners Attitude: Women have a higher tendency to plan their financial goals in line with specific life moments.
